Bell time changes to roll out in September

Start and end times for local schools could be later come September. Bell time changes are coming into effect for the central region, including North Grenville, for the 2020-2021 school year. This is phase two of a three-year implementation schedule, which started with schools in Lanark, Smiths Falls and Leeds last year.

Classes will start at 8:00am for all secondary schools and between 9:15 and 9:30am for elementary schools. High school students will be let out at 2:10pm and elementary students will finish their day between 3:35 and 3:50pm, depending on start time.

The bell time change is a joint venture between the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB), Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) and Student Transportation of Eastern Ontario (STEO).

Janet Murray, General Manager/CAO of STEO, says unified school days will result in transportation efficiencies. She noted there’s also the value associated with district-wide learning opportunities and creating consistent expectations for families, regardless of the school or board students attend.

Murray explained out of 55 impacted schools, approximately 14 will experience a bell time change of more than 15 minutes. She says letters will be sent out to all families with more details about the bell time changes. Murray noted families who will experience a more significant change will be contacted by phone.
