North Grenville Council proclaims Van Turken Day

Van Turken hasn’t flown the coop in spirit. The wily bird that captured the hearts of thousands of people now has her own official day. North Grenville Council voted in favour of proclaiming the second Saturday in February as Van Turken Day last night.

The request was brought forward by Lisa Brownrigg, founder of the Van Turken – Kemptville’s favourite turkey Facebook group. Brownrigg created the page, which now boasts over 2,200 members, two weeks ago. Van Turken quickly rose to stardom, attracting national media attention and putting Kemptville on the map.

The fugitive fowl, best known for her ability to disrupt traffic at Kemptville’s busiest intersection, was captured by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry on Feb. 13. She was then released back into the wild, far from the paparazzi and heavy traffic.

Mayor Nancy Peckford says amid the flurry of selfies, memes, viral videos, tributes and poems, what defined the Van Turken phenomenon was how much the community cared about her fate. She noted a lot of good-natured fun was derived from watching the wild turkey find its way in the world.

Brownrigg says Van Turken brought the community together and created a lot of joy. She explained hundreds of North Grenville residents have been asking for a Van Turken Day, so the community can relive the silliness once a year.

Brownrigg noted a contest may be launched to design a Van Turken flag, to be flown in honour of the unofficial mascot of North Grenville.
