Oxford-on-Rideau closure postponed

The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) announced it’s postponing the closure of Oxford-on-Rideau Public School. A letter was sent out to parents and guardians yesterday.

The school, located in Oxford Mills, was slated to close in June of 2021.

The UCDSB says it plans on keeping the school open for an extra year, with a new closure date of June 30, 2022.

The reason for the extension relates to the recent announcement regarding funding for an addition at North Grenville District High School (NGDHS), according to the letter signed by Superintendent of Schools David Coombs.

It states the pending construction at NGDHS may impact incoming student accomodation at South Branch Elementary School, which is where the UCDSB intended to send students from Oxford-on-Rideau. Work on the project is expected to go beyond September 2021.

The school board’s regional office, housed at Oxford-on-Rideau, will also remain open until 2022.

The UCDSB says this doesn’t change the decision to close the school, but it does delay the closure for two more school years.

The UCDSB Board of Trustees made the decision to close the school in March of 2017.
