Walking School Bus pilot launching in Kemptville

A new initiative aims to increase the number of kids walking to school. The Leeds, Grenville and Lanark District Health Unit is launching a Walking School School Bus pilot project in Kemptville.

Tawnya Boileau, School Health Coordinator, says a Walking School Bus is basically a group of kids walking together under the supervision of a trained adult leader. She noted the Walking School Bus follows a fixed and safe route, with designated bus stops and pick-up times.

The Health Unit is seeking volunteers for the pilot, which is set to launch on April 1 and run until the end of June. People interested in volunteering can email [email protected]. Boileau explained there will be three routes, spanning a distance of about one kilometer, running five days per week. Registration will open later this month, once the routes are announced.

Boileau says the goal is to keep kids healthy. She noted physical activity has many benefits and when kids walk to school, they arrive more alert and ready to learn.

The Health Unit received a $60,000 grant from the Ontario Active School Travel Fund in support of its active school travel project, which includes the Walking School Bus pilot.
