Sweetheart Brunch being held in memory of Pat Maloney

The Sweetheart Brunch is getting ready to celebrate 22 years. The event is happening on February 9 at the North Grenville Municipal Centre, from 8:30am to 12:30. Tickets are $10 each, or $5 for kids between the ages of six and 11 – kids under six are free.

Chair Jim McManaman says the Sweetheart Brunch had humble beginnings. He noted it was originally held at the Holy Cross Catholic Church hall and served around 90 people the first year. McManaman explained attendance has topped 1,200 for the past few years and the event nets around $20,000 for local charities annually.

The Sweetheart Brunch is put on by the Knights of Columbus. McManaman says the group is committed to giving back to the community. A total of $17,000 will be handed out to charities this year, including the Beth Donovan Hospice, Ryan’s Well Foundation and Leeds & Grenville Interval House.

The Sweetheart Brunch is being held in memory of Pat Maloney this year. The community leader, who was instrumental in raising funds to build the Kemptville District Hospital, passed away in September. McManaman noted Maloney was a long-serving Knight, who handled the music for the Sweetheart Brunch since its inception.

Harry’s Carnations, in memory of the late Harry Pratt, will be available again this year by donation.

Over 100 volunteers make the Sweetheart Brunch possible annually. People are encouraged to buy tickets in advance from Scotiabank, which matches ticket sales. Tickets will also be available at the door.
