Prescott boy aims to feed the hungry, clothe the homeless

Thomas Jacques is a real-life superhero. The nine-year-old from Prescott is on a mission to feed the hungry and clothe the homeless.

Laurie Gamble, Thomas’ grandma, says it all started in kindergarten. She explained Thomas would come home from school saying he was starving. Gamble noted he was giving away the food in his lunch to other kids who didn’t have anything to eat.

By the age of seven, Thomas was filling his backpack with canned goods to donate to food drives. Gamble says he would come home with cold hands, even though he had extra mitts, and it turned out he was giving them away to people on the playground.

She noted Thomas outlined his Christmas wish in a letter to Santa this year: for people in Canada not to be hungry and the homeless to be warm.

Gamble sat Thomas down and they came up with an idea. They put out a call for donations to the community, which pulled through in a big way. Thomas has put together 30 bags for homeless people – containing coats, scarves, hats and mitts – so far.

He’s also been collecting tents, sleeping bags and blankets. Gamble says the plan is to go to the tent city near LeBreton Flats, the Ottawa Mission and Byward Market to hand out the donations on Saturday. She noted Thomas is also making lunch bags and Christmas cards to give to people.

Gamble explained she’s never known a child to be so compassionate about another human being. She says Thomas plans on doing this every year.

People can still donate to Thomas’ cause. Items can be dropped off at 632 Royal Place or people can reach out to Gamble through Facebook to arrange pick-up.
