Municipality handing out free radon test kits

The Municipality of North Grenville is hosting an information session in response to the news that Leeds, Grenville and Lanark houses have the highest levels of radon in the province.

The event is set for Tuesday at the municipal centre, starting at 6:30pm.

Phil Gerrard, Director of Planning and Development, says radon is a naturally occurring substance across the province, which is known to cause health problems if it accumulates in houses. He noted specific provisions in the building code identify how to remediate this problem and it’s an easy fix.

Gerrard explained the municipality has partnered with the Canadian Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists, which is providing 100 free test kits to hand out to people. People can pick up a kit at the information session and bring it back to the municipality to get it tested.

He says in his 35 years with the building division, he’s never seen radon to be an issue in North Grenville, but that doesn’t mean it’s not there.

The information session is open to everyone in the community.
