OPP nabs scammer after victim loses over $100,000

A 33-year-old North York man is facing charges following an online romance scam. Grenville County OPP says an Edwardsburgh/Cardinal resident lost over $100,000.

The scammer met the victim on Facebook, according to the OPP, and gained the victim’s trust by communicating for two months prior to asking for money.

The investigation began on October 18. The accused is charged with fraud over $5,000 and is scheduled to appear at Brockville Court.

The OPP says there are ways to avoid a romance scam, including looking out for people who ask for money or small gifts, quickly leave dating sites and ask to communicate in other ways (instant messages or email), avoid talking on the phone, claim to be in love with you after a very short period and constantly make excuses why they can’t meet in person.
