Affordable housing units possible for old high school

Affordable housing is on the table for the former North Grenville District High School.

Mayor Nancy Peckford says the concept is very preliminary at this time. She noted council has been working with Ken Demelo, who owns the building, since June.

Peckford explained Demelo is enthusiastic about a mixed-used development with retail, commercial and a diversity of rental units, including some that could be deemed affordable.

She says the Municipality of North Grenville is acting as a facilitator to explore the possibility of federal and provincial grant dollars for the project.

Peckford explained private developers can apply for funding through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC), which the municipality has been in contact with. She noted the conversations with CMHC highlighted that this kind of development would be eligible for significant grant dollars.

Conceptual drawings, commissioned by Demelo, were presented at the affordable housing discussion forum held last week.

Peckford says the next step is submitting an application for funding.
