UCDSB says schools will close if CUPE strikes

Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) schools may be closed on Monday. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) gave notice of a possible strike earlier this week. Strike action will commence Monday if an agreement is not met on Sunday.

CUPE represents support staff, including educational assistants, early childhood educators, custodial/maintenance staff and clerical staff.

The UCDSB says it will not be able to operate its facilities or provide proper supervision and care to students if CUPE strikes. All before and after school care programs for school-aged students will be cancelled, but third-party daycares operating in UCDSB schools will remain open.

CUPE represents 1,600 employees within the board, or 40% of its staff.

The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) announced yesterday it would be closing all schools in the event of a strike.
