Prescott OPP detachment received a complaint on October 29th from a resident who received a fraud attempt through Facebook. She accepted a friend request from someone already on her friend list, with the same profile picture as her current friend so the request was accepted. They began a private chat when her friend advised she had won money and that she was on the list as well, she only needed to be-friend a male whose name she gave. She accepted and they began a chat. He told her she was required to send $1000 to have the $150,000 winnings sent to her. Becoming suspicious she asked her friend a personal question she would know, when it could not be answered she realized it was fraud. Very little personal information was provided.
If you receive a suspicious message from a so-called “friend”, check to see if they have more than one account and then block the suspicious user. Always double-check the source before answering requests online.
