Local athlete heading to Mexico to compete in track

Zac Bowness is going up against some of the best runners in North America. The 17-year-old St. Michael Catholic High School student is 1 of 50 athletes selected to represent Canada at the 2019 North America, Central America and Caribbean Athletic Association (NACAC) U18/U23 Championships.

The competition is being held in Querétaro, Mexico, from July 5 to 7.

Bowness says the NACAC selected him based on his time at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) Championships. He placed 5th at OFSAA after running the 400m in 48.32 seconds.

Bowness says he started doing track in grade 4, but got really serious about it in grade 10. He noted running gives him a sense of accomplishment. Bowness says it’s nice to see the improvement after weeks, months and years of training.

He’s working on his endurance and form to get ready for the NACAC Championships.

Bowness says he made it to this level because of support from the Brockville Legion, his coach, mentor and the amazing coaches from the Mustangs track & field team.
