Local student awarded $50,000 scholarship to Western University

Madeline Hubbard is getting ready to graduate from St. Michael Catholic High School next week. But she has more than just a secondary school diploma to celebrate. Hubbard was awarded the President’s Entrance Scholarship to Western University. The scholarship is worth $50,000 over four years.

The application process included an essay about a problem in society. Hubbard, one of the organizers of the student walkout protesting changes to the sex-ed curriculum back in September, chose that as her subject.

Hubbard says she wants to be a pediatric surgeon one day. She’ll be studying biology, chemistry and calculus at university.

Hubbard says Western was her top choice school, even before the scholarship. She noted it had the best program options for her. Hubbard says she’ll be going into biomedical sciences with a minor in music.

She says she got the call about the scholarship when she was in the car with her mom. Hubbard says they both started to cry and her mom immediately began calling relatives. She says it was a very happy moment for her whole family.

The President’s Entrance Scholarship is awarded on the basis of outstanding academic performance to people who demonstrate ability for creative and innovative thought.
