Leeds Grenville MPP Steve Clark: Gananoque will keep their casino

On the morning after City of Kingston residents voted overwhelmingly against having a casino in their community, Leeds-Grenville MPP Steve Clark welcomed the Liberal government’s commitment to not relocate the Thousand Islands Casino.

When asked in Question Period Oct. 28 if his government would respect the results of Kingston’s referendum, Acting Premier and Finance Minister Charles Sousa confirmed to Clark they would not impose a casino on an unwilling host city.

In a ballot question as part of the Oct. 27 municipal vote in Kingston, 67 per cent voted against having a casino in the city.

Prior to Monday night’s vote and the government’s announcement Tuesday, moving the casino to Kingston was a possible outcome of the Liberals’ “modernization” of Ontario Lottery and Gaming.

Clark said it’s frustrating it took so long for the government to make the decision, but he’s pleased they got it right.
