Blue Church repairs underway

The Blue Church on County Road 2 in Prescott is getting a facelift. Wind off the St. Lawrence damaged the clapboard siding on the south and west walls.

The clapboard was removed and new siding is ready to go up. The church will be two-tone until the clapboard gets painted blue.

Volunteer Board Coordinator John Harding says repairing an old building is like opening a can of worms. He says you start with one thing and realize, while you’re at it, you really should do something else. Harding says that’s the issue the board is facing with the windows.

The windows may be repaired or replaced, depending on finances. The total cost of replacing the siding is around $14,000. That figure could reach $20,000 with the windows. The Blue Church, designated heritage, does not get funding from any church group or the government. The board maintains the property through community donations.

Harding says the church is the third one built on the property, after the first two burnt down. He says the existing church was built in 1845. Harding says board members had been told there was a fire in the existing church but didn’t know for sure until the siding came off and there were charred timbers.
