Locals to protest cuts to library services tomorrow

The General Strike Against Doug Ford is coming to town. Kemptville is one of 26 communities across the province participating. The strike is set for 12 noon tomorrow on Prescott Street in front of the North Grenville Public Library.

Local organizer Alan McKay says he’s fighting for interlibrary loan service, which was cancelled due to funding cuts. He says the lending program between libraries was introduced a long time ago as part of previous budget cuts. McKay says it was a carrot on a stick for people, when the government said it wouldn’t provide money to buy new books and now that’s gone too.

Around 50 people are interested in the strike, according to the Facebook event page.

McKay says he agrees 100 per cent that the Liberals were overspending. He says something has to be done, but there has been 40 years of tax cuts. McKay says it’s time to talk about raising taxes to pay for the services people want.

Other participating communities include Perth and Ottawa. The main event is happening at Queen’s Park in Toronto.
