Residents speak for and against affordable housing project

A zoning amendment meeting was held for the affordable housing project proposed for Jack Street. Community Living North Grenville and Lockwood Brothers Construction have partnered on the project, which includes an 11-unit complex.

Several members of the community put in their two cents during the meeting, held last week. Some spoke in favour of the project, while others raised concerns ranging from snow removal, drainage and neighbourhood compatibility.

The request is to change the property’s zoning from residential first density to residential third density. The Committee of the Whole recommended the zoning amendment to council in a recorded vote. The final decision is set for tomorrow night.

Executive Director Sandra McNamara says Community Living owns eight other properties in North Grenville and though concerns were raised, the organization is committed to being a good neighbour.

The next step for the project is the site plan approval. Municipal staff made note of 17 site plan related issues during the meeting and will include those in the site plan approval process.

There is an existing duplex on the property and the plan is to build 9 new town homes in 3-unit blocks. Construction is slated for the spring. Applications for the units will be made available to anyone in the community who qualifies for affordable housing.
