Brockville woman scams Ottawa man out of $20,000

The Grenville County OPP Crime Unit investigated a case of familiar fraud. The OPP says this type of fraud occurs when a friend or family member uses a close relationship for their own financial gain.

A 35-year-old Brockville woman befriended a 41-year-old man from the Ottawa area, according to police. The OPP says the woman stole the victim’s identity and used his personal information for fraudulent means, resulting in a $20,000 loss for the man.

The woman is facing charges of fraud over $5,000, two counts of forging documents, two counts of fraud under $5,000 and four counts of identity theft.

She is set to appear at Brockville Court on April 12.

The OPP says the most common form of financial fraud is when your personal information is used without your knowledge. If you suspect that you have become a victim of identity theft contact the OPP by calling 1-800-310-1122.
