Prescott senior scammed out of $30,000

Grenville County OPP wants you to be aware of a recurring scam.

Constable Suzanne Runciman says it is an old scam where someone who may be in search of love or friendship will meet someone online, who they start trusting. Over time the scammer will start asking for money and that is a big warning sign Runciman says.

“It’s usually online so, you could meet them through a dating site or Facebook for example, any kind of social media site. And they’ll start talking to you through messenger. Some people might even call you by phone afterwards.”

Runciman says recently a 73-year old female from Prescott was scammed out of over $30,000 after communicating with someone since 2016.

“Main thing really is be wary if someone is professing their love. They’ve never met you before and if they ask you for money, talk to your friends and family before you send any money.”

Online scams can be reported to the OPP by calling them toll free at 1-888-310-1122.
