Municipality to pursue driver’s insurance for hole in municipal centre

The Municipality of North Grenville will seek to recover costs for repairing the hole in the municipal centre. The damage was caused when a van drove into the building on October 19. Repairs will cost an estimated $16,000.

The matter was first brought up last week during Committee of the Whole. Staff said that the municipality’s insurance would not cover damages because the cost was less than the deductible.

Following questions from members of council and the public, staff looked into whether it would be possible to recover costs by pursuing the driver’s insurance. Staff presented new information during council last night.

CAO Brian Carré says the municipality’s insurance broker will act as an advisor during the cost recovery process. However, cost recovery is not guaranteed.

Repairs are set to done in about a month. Money to fix the building will still come out of the municipality’s contingency fund for the time being.

Carré says all associated costs, including the engineer’s report and estimates for building repairs, will be included in the recovery amount.
