Habitat for Humanity building two homes in Prescott next year

Habitat for Humanity Thousand Islands has chosen Prescott for its next build project. Work will begin on the duplex starting in the spring. Habitat is currently working on a project in Lansdowne, which is set to wrap up in February.

Vice Chair Martin Van Andel says applications for the Prescott homes are being accepted now. He says Habitat looks for families who are currently renting and want to move into home ownership, but need support to do so.

Families selected put in 500 hours of sweat equity in place of a down payment. Habitat holds the mortgage on the home, which is interest free.

Van Andel says Habitat sells the homes at fair market value. He says it’s a hand up, not a hand out.

The Prescott homes will be built on Boundary Street. Habitat owns 12 acres of land in the town thanks to an anonymous donor. The organization did a build in Prescott back in 2012-2013.

Volunteers will be needed once construction starts. For more information, or to apply for the Prescott homes, stop by the Brockville or Kemptville ReStore. You can also get more details online by clicking here
