North Grenville grad speaks at WE Day

Sarah Telford hit the stage at WE Day. The Merrickville resident and North Grenville District High School grad is an advocate for accessibility.

WE Day brings together tens of thousands of youth who are committed to making a difference locally and globally. It was held yesterday in Ottawa.

Telford spoke about her work making life easier for people in wheelchairs. The 20-year-old was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of 11. Her cancer was so aggressive it came back and she had to have a stem cell transplant. The transplant was partially rejected, causing a tightening of muscles and skin that confined Telford to a wheelchair.

She advocates for small changes, like buttons for automatic doors. Telford even took the CEO of CHEO on a tour through the hospital in a wheelchair to give him a better perspective. WE Day organizers saw Telford’s tour on the news and invited her to this year’s event.

She is working on starting an accessible committee in Merrickville. Telford says if she can touch one person then she has done her job.
