Southgate pushes forward with outdoor rink project

Southgate Community Church is moving forward with the North Grenville Community Rink project. News came down today that Southgate was not selected as the new home for the Canada 150 Rink from Parliament Hill.

The Canada 150 Rink included everything, from the boards to lighting, and a $150,000 grant to install it. Gananoque will get the rink and hopes to name it after the late Gord Brown, who passed away in May.

Pastor Ben Last says the church remains positive and will continue working towards building an outdoor rink for the community. The rink will be free to use for everyone in North Grenville.

Southgate has partnered with community members and the Ottawa Senators Foundation to build the rink. The NHL Players’ Association has committed $50,000 towards the new rink. The total cost of the project is estimated at $300,000.

Last says the goal is to have the outdoor rink open this winter. The church has gone through all the site plan applications and engineering reports. Construction on the rink’s base will begin in the next few weeks.

A fundraising gala is in works for November to bring in dollars for the project. The My Kemptville Now newsroom will have more details about the event as they become available.
