Outdated filtration system to be replaced using reallocated dollars

The Water Pollution Control Plant is running on an outdated filtration system. Director of Public Works Karen Dunlop brought a report forward to council on Monday stating the need to reallocate dollars towards fixing it. The two capital projects include replacing the tertiary filters and installation of a new UV system. Dunlop says the filters are original to the plant.

Last summer, due to increased rain, the filters began to deteriorate. Dunlop says the UV system has also reached its useful life.

An extra $400,000 is needed this year to fix the filters and UV system. Staff are proposing taking about $200,000 from the department’s capital fund and another $200,000 from the wastewater contingency to cover the extra cost. The total cost of the rehabilitation is just shy of $500,000 not including taxes.

The final vote on the reallocation is set for Monday night.
