Facade of former NGDHS to be protected through heritage designation

Heritage designation will only preserve the front of the former North Grenville District High School in downtown Kemptville. A bylaw to designate the property of ‘cultural heritage value and interest’ was recommended to council on Monday night. The building is owned by the Upper Canada District School Board. It became obsolete when the new Kemptville Public School opened on County Road 44. The plan was to demolish part of the building but the municipality served the board with a Notice of Intention to Designate the property last year. The school board responded with a letter of objection. Director of Planning and Development Phil Gerrard says the matter was reviewed.

The board withdrew its objection to the designation on May 4. Gerrard says the designation only applies to cultural aspects of the property not the entire building.

The final vote on the matter is set for next Monday night. To see the full report, visit northgrenville.ca.
