MP seat to be filled through by-election

A by-election will be called for Leeds-Grenville-Thousand Islands and Rideau Lakes. The by-election will fill the vacant seat of MP Gord Brown, who died on May 2. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau can make the call starting May 14. Conservative Whip Chief of Staff Ann Marie Keeley says the by-election could be called any time.

The Prime Minister has 180 days to call the by-election. The earliest date for an election is June 25. Keeley says Conservative Whip Mark Strahl will represent the riding in the interim.

The House of Commons clerk’s office will be mailing out a letter to everyone on the electoral list in the riding explaining the process. Keeley says the letter will also contain new contact information for constituents.

The MP’s office is still open and being run by two staff members.
