Classified ad scam stopped in its tracks

One would-be scammer was thwarted by the Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry OPP. Two area newspapers recently ran a classified ad from a woman seeking a caregiver for her elderly mother-in-law suffering from dementia. This ad was discovered as a scam after two people complained to police.

The OPP are asking people not to respond to the ad. It was paid for by credit card and nothing about the payment caused concern.

The scammer’s goal was to get personal information like banking records. No money was lost by the two people who contacted the OPP about the ad.

The OPP says a quick Google search finds cases related to this advertisement throughout Canada and the United States.

The OPP reminds people that giving out financial information over the phone is never a good idea and not to believe people who say they are from your bank or credit card company.
