Centennial ‘67 wins $10,000 from battery recycling challenge

It pays to recycle. Centennial ‘67 Public School won the Ontario Schools Battery Recycling Challenge. First prize winner splits the $20,000 pot, totalling about $10,000 for the Spencerville school. The school entered the challenge back in December. Principal Debra Schouten says the idea to participate came through the parent council.

Centennial ‘67 collected 46,840 batteries – equivalent to 20 drums full. Schouten says the win is a reflection of everyone coming together.

All batteries collected through the challenge are sent to the Raw Materials Company. Centennial ‘67 was the only school in the Upper Canada District School Board to take part in the challenge. The parent council is considering using the funds to buy new playground equipment.
