Cautionary Tale from the OPP

A Rideau Lakes resident is being used as a cautionary tale by the OPP.

Last week officers with the OPP responded to a resident who said they had been defrauded by a caller pretending to be their grandson. The fraudster called and said he had been responsible for a car accident that caused the other driver injuries and now needed money to pay the medical bills. They called three times during the week and collected over $4000 from the victim.

March is Fraud Prevention Month with the OPP and they are reminding everyone to always check the identity of anyone you are sending money to. They suggest asking a series of questions that would be difficult for an imposter to answer, like what is your mother’s birthday. After this police say you should also contact the person directly, just to be safe.

If you, or anyone you know, has been the victim of fraud it can be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre or Crime Stoppers
