Brockville Mayor Seeking Provincial Liberal Nomination

Brockville Mayor Dave Henderson has announced he will be seeking the Ontario Liberal Party’s nomination for the riding of Leeds – Grenville.

Henderson, who is finishing his third term as mayor, made the announcement last night at the Union Jack Pub in downtown Brockville. Greg Best, the President of the Ontario Liberal Party for Leeds-Grenville, and Christine Milks, the 2014 liberal candidate, were both in attendance and put their support firmly behind Henderson. Best said he believes Henderson is the right candidate to bring Leeds-Grenville’s municipal issues before Queen’s Park.

During a speech to his supporters and the media Henderson described himself as fiscally conservative with liberal social leanings. Henderson said the three big issues he believes the province should be focused on are pharma care, tuition decreases and the minimum wage, adding he thinks these are the issues this election will be fought on.

When asked about Liberal Premier of Ontario Kathleen Wynne he said she is a leader with integrity, noting he thinks the party is putting the right plans in place and that they are moving the province into the future. He points to the environmental impact removing coal plants from the area has had, specifically fewer smog warnings during the summer. Henderson added you don’t see a lot of politicians shun the spotlight the way she does.

It was pointed out that Henderson once run for the Progressive Conservative Party but he says the change was prompted because the PC Party is no longer progressive in his opinion, adding that he and his family joke they’ve always been liberal but veered off into the blue.
The vote will be Thursday of next week, with more details to follow. The province wide election will be held June 7th.
