OPP reminding parents about the importance of online safety for children

The OPP is reminding parents to be cautious when it comes to who might be speaking to your kids.

Leeds OPP says officers were called on Thursday by concerned parents. It turns out their 15-year-old son had been speaking to an adult female from the United States for over a year.

The OPP says that parents need to speak to their children about the dangers of the internet.

Acting Staff Sergeant Josh Kingsley reminds parents that “having direct and open communication with your child about their use of the internet is the most important step to protecting them online.” He says parents should “view the child’s online profile and check for information that might be unsafe, including email addresses or unacceptable photos.”

The OPP says parents should be aware that many gaming devices connect to the internet and provide online chat capabilities, allowing anyone, including predators, to communicate with your child.

The OPP also says parents can choose to set available electronic parental controls or event disconnect some capabilities of the devices.
