Sustainable North Grenville happy about Energy East pipeline cancellation

Sustainable North Grenville is calling the cancellation of the Energy East pipeline good news.

The group says the proposed pipeline carrying diluted bitumen through North Grenville posed a direct threat to the area’s land and drinking water. In a media release Chris Weissflog, a spokesperson for SNG, says the local group is relieved Trans Canada has cancelled the pipeline project. Since Trans Canada first announced plans for the pipeline in 2013 Sustainable North Grenville has been actively raising awareness about the project. Ian Angus, a local environmental expert and author says “New tar sands pipelines don’t make sense, economically or environmentally, in a world that is addressing climate change and moving away from fossil fuels. And, thankfully, our water supply now won’t be put at risk.”

Late last week Trans Canada announced it was cancelling the project.
