Health Unit: protect yourself and your pets against mosquito-borne viruses

August and September are the months where mosquitoes may be found carrying West Nile Virus and possibly Eastern Equine Encephalitis. Lyme disease is always a risk throughout our region, spring, summer and fall. Tick borne and mosquito borne diseases are preventable. The Health Unit recommends taking the following personal precautions: use insect repellent containing DEET or Icaridin. Wear long pants and sleeves as well as shoes and socks in bug-infested areas. Repair torn screens in doors and windows. Check yourself and your pets for ticks after exposure to long grass. Get your horses vaccinated against the virus. For more info, go to www.healthunit.org.
