UCDSB names new Indigenous Trustee to the board

A new Indigenous Trustee has been named to the Upper Canada District School Board.

Sitting member of the Mohawk Council Ryan Jacobs, who’s also an accredited teacher and community leader from the Akwesasne Territory, is to be sworn in at today’s school board meeting, the first of the year.

The UCDSB says the 36-year-old serves in the educational portfolio with the council, acting as a liaison with the Director of the Ahkwesahsne Mohawk Board of Education to ensure the education system best serves the needs of students in the territory.

Jacobs says he looks forward to his new role and calls it a “great opportunity to work with the outside communities.”

Jacobs replaces former Indigenous Trustee Peter Garrow, who retired on August 31st after more than a decade on the board.
