Ottawa police release Automatic License Plate Recognition arrest numbers

Ottawa Police are celebrating a year using the Automatic License Plate Recognition system.

The police started using the system in August of last year and Sergeant Robert Cairns of the Ottawa Police Traffic Services called it “an enormous success in identifying drivers who should not be on the road”. The device works by identifying a variety of Highway Traffic Act infractions, including stolen license plates and suspended or unlicensed drivers.
According to the Ottawa Police Service over the last 12 months they have stopped; 140 suspended or prohibited drivers, 255 unlicensed drivers, four stolen vehicles or plates, two people wanted on warrants, 1706 long term expired validations and numerous other Highway Traffic Act and Criminal Code offences.

The project has been so successful a second unit has been added to the Traffic Services Unit fleet.
