Oxford-on-Rideau parents hope school can be saved despite the vote to close

Oxford-on-Rideau Public School has not been saved but there’s still a glimmer of hope for students and parents.

The Upper Canada District School Board has voted to move forward with the closure in 2018 subject to space being made available at South Branch Elementary School.

Oxford-on-Rideau Public School parent Katie Lekx-Toniolo says that despite the news, some parents still saw a glimmer of hope in comments made by Trustee Vice-Chair David McDonald.

McDonald, who voted against an amendment to remove the school from the closure list, says the school could still remain open.

Lekx-Toniolo says parents and Oxford-on-Rideau Save our School will continue to fight to try and bring new high-tech programming, french immersion, and before-and-after school daycare to the school. They believe those additions could help enrollment.

Meanwhile, even with the new Kemptville Public School opening, the projected space for students is still not enough to match the number of children in the North Grenville family of schools.
