OPP remind snowmoiblers that ice conditions may not be safe this time of year

With the warmer weather arriving, the OPP is reminding snowmobilers and fishing enthusiasts to be safe around ice.

The OPP says you can never be 100 percent sure the ice is safe to be on, especially with a snowmobile, but there are tips that you can use to help you stay safe. Those tips include checking the weather and staying off the ice during warm or stormy days, don’t travel on ice after consuming alcohol or drugs, have a buddy with you and make sure someone knows your destination and arrival time and finally, carry a small survival kit with ice picks, a rope, lighter, waterproof matches, fire starter, pocket knife, compass and whistle.

If you’re not sure about ice conditions, stay off.
